Join us for the Willoughby Symphony Young Composer Award's 'How to Write a Winner' masterclass and gain unique behind-the-scenes insights into the art of orchestral composition. Observe as entrants from the 2026 Award have their works reviewed and workshopped by a panel of leading industry professionals, receiving practical feedback on everything from orchestration, musical ideas to performance considerations.
Designed for aspiring and emerging composers, this masterclass offers invaluable guidance on writing for a community orchestra and developing a composition that is both engaging for performers and compelling for audiences. You'll learn what judges look for in a successful Young Composer Award submission, gain a deeper understanding of the creative process and hear firsthand advice from experts working in the industry today. Furthermore, in response to feedback from the 2025 workshop, this year’s masterclass will include small group discussions with panellists to enable more detailed feedback.
Whether you're considering entering the Young Composer Award for the first time or looking to strengthen your orchestral writing skills, this workshop is a rare opportunity to learn from professionals and connect with Australia's vibrant composing community.
